Malaria risk in Sylhet
Prevention Guide
Malaria Prevention Guide for Sylhet Region Malaria is a serious disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Symptoms include high fever, chills, sweating, body aches, and fatigue. Without prompt treatment, it can become life-threatening. Sylhet faces moderate-to-high malaria risk at 55 out of 100. The region's tropical climate, heavy monsoon rainfall, and extensive tea gardens create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Forested hill areas, stagnant water in agricultural fields, and humid conditions from June through November intensify transmission. Rural communities near haor wetlands and border areas with forested terrain face elevated exposure, particularly during evening and nighttime hours when mosquitoes are most active. Here are key prevention steps you can take. Sleep under an insecticide-treated bed net every night. This single step reduces your risk significantly. Make sure the net has no tears, tuck it under your mattress, and replace it every two to three years or as directed. This is your most effective personal protection. Apply mosquito repellent containing DEET or picaridin to exposed skin during dusk and dawn hours. Reapply every four to six hours, especially if you are outdoors in tea estates, rural areas, or near water bodies after sunset. Eliminate standing water around your home. Empty flower pots, old tires, water containers, and clogged drains at least once a week. These are prime mosquito breeding sites. Cover water storage containers tightly and clean your surroundings regularly. Wear long-sleeved clothing and full-length pants during peak mosquito hours from dusk until dawn. Light-colored clothing is preferable as it attracts fewer mosquitoes. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop fever within two weeks of being in a malaria-risk area. Early diagnosis through a simple blood test and proper treatment prevent serious complications. Do not self-medicate with incomplete doses of antimalarial drugs. If you travel to Sylhet's rural or forested areas, consult your doctor about preventive antimalarial medication before your trip and carry your bed net and repellent.
