Hantavirus risk in Hong Kong

Hantavirus Prevention Guide for Hong Kong
Hantavirus is a viral infection carried primarily by rodents. In humans, it can cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory illness with a high fatality rate. Transmission occurs mainly through inhalation of dust contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. Direct contact with infected rodents or their nests can also spread the virus.
Hong Kong's risk rating of 52/100 reflects moderate concern. The city's dense population, extensive green spaces, and humid subtropical climate create favorable conditions for rodent activity. Older buildings in districts like Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok, and Kowloon City often have structural gaps that allow rodent entry. Construction sites, warehouses, and areas near drainage systems are particularly high-risk zones. The brown rat and house mouse are the primary carriers locally.
Prevention Steps:
Seal all entry points in your home or workplace. Rodents can squeeze through gaps as small as 6 millimeters. Install metal screens on vents and use steel wool to block holes around pipes and wiring.
Maintain strict food hygiene. Store all food in sealed containers. Clean up crumbs and spills immediately. Secure rubbish bins with tight-fitting lids and dispose of waste regularly.
Handle rodent contamination safely. Never sweep or vacuum droppings directly. Wet the area with a disinfectant spray first, then clean with paper towels while wearing gloves and a mask. This prevents virus particles from becoming airborne.
Reduce outdoor harborage. Clear overgrown vegetation, stacked materials, and debris near buildings. Trim tree branches that provide roof access for rodents.
Seek medical attention promptly if you develop sudden fever, muscle aches, or breathing difficulties after known rodent exposure. Early treatment significantly improves outcomes. Inform your doctor about any contact with rodents or contaminated environments.
Regular pest control inspections in commercial and residential buildings remain the most effective community-wide strategy against Hantavirus in Hong Kong.
