Dengue Fever Prevention Guide for Honiara
Dengue fever is a viral illness spread by Aedes mosquitoes that bite during the day. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, and rash. In serious cases, it can cause dangerous bleeding and organ damage.
Honiara's risk level of 63/100 reflects real dangers here. The tropical climate keeps temperatures warm and humidity high year-round, giving mosquitoes ideal breeding conditions. Frequent rainfall fills open containers, discarded tires, and blocked drains with standing water. Many households store water in open tanks during supply interruptions, creating perfect mosquito nurseries. Construction sites, markets, and densely populated neighborhoods add to the problem. Poor waste management means trash collects water in gutters and roadside piles.
Here is what you can do right now.
First, eliminate standing water around your home every week. Empty and scrub buckets, flower pots, old tires, and water storage containers. Cover tanks and drums with tight lids so mosquitoes cannot get inside.
Second, use mosquito repellent on exposed skin during the day, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when biting is heaviest. Choose products with DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Third, sleep under a treated mosquito net even during naps. Wear long sleeves and long pants when working outdoors or sitting in markets and bus stops.
Fourth, install screens on windows and doors where possible. Seal gaps where mosquitoes enter your home.
Fifth, report large breeding sites like blocked drains, abandoned lots, and construction pools to the Honiara City Council vector control team. Community cleanup days matter because your neighbor's yard affects your family.
If you develop sudden high fever with severe body pain, go to the National Referral Hospital or nearest clinic immediately. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen as these increase bleeding risk. Use paracetamol only until a doctor confirms your diagnosis.
Dengue spreads fast in Honiara but most deaths are preventable with these steps.
