Dengue Fever risk in Blantyre

Dengue Fever Prevention Guide for Blantyre
Dengue fever is a viral illness spread by Aedes mosquitoes that bite mainly during the day. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, and rash. In severe cases it can cause dangerous bleeding and organ damage.
Blantyre faces a moderate risk of dengue transmission. Key factors include rapid urban growth with poor drainage, common water storage in open containers due to inconsistent supply, warm temperatures year-round, and limited mosquito control programs in many neighborhoods. Informal settlements and areas with waste accumulation create ideal breeding conditions.
Protect yourself with these actions:
-
Eliminate standing water around your home. Empty and scrub water storage tanks, buckets, flower pots, and discarded containers at least weekly. Cover all water storage with tight-fitting lids.
-
Use mosquito repellent on exposed skin during daytime hours, especially in early morning and late afternoon when Aedes mosquitoes are most active. Reapply as directed on the product label.
-
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when possible, particularly if spending time outdoors or in areas with many mosquitoes.
-
Install or repair window and door screens. Sleep under a treated bed net if screens are not available, as some Aedes mosquitoes also bite at dawn and dusk.
-
Report areas with stagnant water, blocked drains, or accumulated waste to your local health office or city council. Community clean-up efforts reduce breeding sites for everyone.
If you develop sudden high fever with severe headache or body pain, seek medical care immediately. Avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen as these can worsen bleeding risks. Paracetamol is safer for fever management.
