Cholera risk in Da Nang
Prevention Guide
Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, spread through contaminated water and food. In Da Nang, the risk score of 66/100 reflects elevated concern due to several local factors including monsoon flooding, dense urban populations, street food culture with fresh raw seafood, and aging water infrastructure that can mix sewage with drinking water supplies. The warm coastal climate also promotes bacterial growth year-round. What you can do: 1. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Ice in drinks is a common source of infection. If bottled water is unavailable, boil water for at least one minute and store it in a clean, covered container. 2. Eat thoroughly cooked food, especially seafood. Avoid raw or undercooked shellfish from street vendors near the Han River and coastal areas. Choose busy stalls where food is freshly prepared in front of you. 3. Wash hands with soap and clean water before eating and after using the toilet. Carry alcohol-based hand sanitizer as a backup when soap is unavailable. 4. Avoid swimming in the Han River and nearby coastal areas during and after heavy rains, as flooding increases sewage contamination. Children should be kept away from standing floodwater. 5. If you develop sudden, severe watery diarrhea, begin oral rehydration immediately using ORS packets (available at local pharmacies) and seek medical care without delay. Da Nang General Hospital and several international clinics can manage cholera cases. Early treatment with rehydration saves lives. Pregnant women, young children, and elderly travelers should take extra precautions, as dehydration progresses rapidly. Carry ORS packets and water purification tablets when traveling outside central Da Nang, especially during the October to December rainy season.
