Cholera Prevention Guide for Beirut
Cholera is a bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. It spreads through contaminated water and food. Without treatment, it can be life-threatening within hours.
Beirut faces elevated cholera risk due to several local factors: aging water infrastructure with potential sewage contamination, inconsistent municipal water supply forcing reliance on informal vendors, frequent power outages affecting water treatment and refrigeration, dense urban neighborhoods where sanitation systems are strained, and population displacement increasing pressure on already limited resources.
Here are practical steps to protect yourself and your family.
-
Treat all drinking water. Boil water for at least one minute, or use certified water purification tablets or filters rated to remove bacteria. Do not trust water from unverified tanker trucks or street vendors. Store treated water in clean, covered containers.
-
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water before eating, before preparing food, after using the toilet, and after handling anything that may be contaminated. If soap is unavailable, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
-
Eat only thoroughly cooked food served hot. Avoid raw vegetables, unpeeled fruits, street food of uncertain preparation, raw or undercooked seafood, and ice from unknown sources. Peel fruits yourself and rinse with treated water.
-
Keep living areas clean. Dispose of waste properly. Ensure sewage does not pool near water storage or food preparation areas. Disinfect surfaces that may contact food.
-
Know the warning signs and act fast. Watery diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps mean seek medical care immediately. Begin oral rehydration with a solution of clean water, sugar, and salt while getting to a clinic. Early treatment saves lives.
Keep oral rehydration salts at home. Share this information with neighbors. Community awareness is your strongest defense.
