Avian Influenza risk in Hyderabad
Prevention Guide
Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a viral infection that primarily affects birds but can occasionally spread to humans through direct contact with infected poultry or contaminated environments. Symptoms in humans range from mild respiratory issues to severe pneumonia and, in rare cases, death. Hyderabad's risk score of 62 out of 100 reflects moderate concern driven by several local factors.
Hyderabad has a dense poultry market ecosystem with numerous live bird markets in areas like Begum Bazaar, Monda Market, and surrounding neighborhoods. The city's warm climate combined with monsoon-season waterlogging creates favorable conditions for virus persistence. High population density and close human-animal interaction in informal poultry setups add to the challenge. Weekend visitors to nearby water bodies like Hussain Sagar and Osman Sagar may also encounter migratory birds carrying the virus.
Here are five practical prevention steps for Hyderabad residents.
First, avoid visiting live poultry markets entirely, especially in the old city areas. If you must buy chicken, purchase only frozen and sealed products from licensed stores and check for the FSSAI certification mark.
Second, cook poultry thoroughly. Ensure chicken reaches an internal temperature of at least 74 degrees Celsius. Never eat half-cooked eggs or runny preparations from street vendors.
Third, maintain strict hand hygiene. Wash hands with soap for at least twenty seconds after handling raw poultry, visiting markets, or touching surfaces in areas with bird activity.
Fourth, keep your home free from bird droppings. If you keep pet birds or have pigeons nesting on your balcony, clean droppings daily using gloves and a disinfectant solution of one part bleach to nine parts water.
Fifth, monitor for symptoms. If you develop fever, cough, or breathing difficulty within seven days of poultry contact, visit a government hospital immediately and mention your exposure history. Do not self-medicate with over-the-counter drugs.
Stay informed through the Telangana State Health Department advisories during outbreak seasons, particularly between November and February when migratory birds arrive.
